The sydney opera house

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

The Sydney opera house, designed by Architect John Utzon , opened in 2003, is an iconic building in the Australian architectural history . It is one of the good examples for modern architecture. It started as the winning entry in the design competition held for an opera house in Bennelong point, continued to attract people’s attention by its stunning views in dawn and dusk, even during night. When the aesthetics of the building gained importance , its function was not that successful. The concept the architect chose, white sails (ship) for the exterior of the opera house perfectly blended with its surrounding with waters. From a distance, appears as if a ship is sailing or floating in water, or the extension of a mamoth sea creature’s tail part cut into parts, sometimes its front elevation looks like the eyes of a peculiar monster. Whatever it is, the fact that the exterior of the building is unique, especially for an opera house having many interpretations allowing the common man’s imagination to wander around to search a clue to know what this structure is all about makes it interesting.
But the fact that the cost of construction at the end became so high when compared to the total estimated building cost makes us think that in one way or the other it must have been economical with minor changes in the design. The interiors of the building especially the performance area looks conjusted , jampacked , stuffy, without the feel of freeness even though the first sight or a first glance make you say it’s good with all those wooden finishes and lighting and detailing in all the enclosing element of the particular space having highlight in the front , with the touch of luxury and grandeur. A few other spaces like Utzon’s room that contains the painting of the architect and common rooms seem to be basic and simple with not much of articulation.Though the concrete shelled Sydney opera house has its style and design, serving its purpose to an extent, adding glory to the continent of Australia, there are a few main things like the echo, reverberation in the interior that lack in this structure that makes us feel that it could have been done better with a sense of completeness filling the loop holes and pitfalls.
